How to apply
Preparation - New or Bare
Ensure the surface is clean, smooth and completely dry before applying the product.Prior to coating all surfaces must be thoroughly free from all dirt, dust, grease, wax and oil.
- Wipe the area to be coated with mineral turpentine and follow with a clean, dry cloth. Allow the timber to dry before sanding.
- Sand with a 240 grade paper to give the timber a smooth, even surface. Remove all sanding dust and wipe the timber to ensure a clean substrate.
- Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to ensure all dust is removed.
- Once dry, proceed with application.
Preparation - Previously Coated
If the previous coating is a two-pack or has worn back to expose bare timber it must be completely removed. Remove all of the coating by sanding and proceed as for bare timber. Previously coated timber must be cleaned to remove any waxes or oils
- Wash the surface with household detergent to clean, dry with a clean cloth.
- Wipe the surface with mineral turpentine to remove any residue. Allow the timber to dry before sanding. Sand the coating to provide a smooth, matt surface.
- Sand using a 240 grade paper to remove any sheen and ensure the finish is even across the entire surface.
- Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to ensure all dust is removed.
- Once dry, proceed with application.
Note: If the previous coating is unknown, check compatibility and adhesion by applying the product to a test area before completing the entire surface. To test on a small section follow steps 1 - 5 to clean and prepare the area. Using a good quality brush apply one coat of Interior Clear (100mm x 100mm) and allow to dry for 8 hours. Once dry cut a line through the test patch using a safety knife. Apply a strip of sticky tape over the area across the cut, leaving an edge free push down firmly. Grip the edge of the tape and peel off in one quick motion. If the area remains intact sand to remove the test section and complete steps 1-6 for the entire area to be coated. If the coating is removed with the tape, the adhesion is unsatisfactory and the old coating should be sanded off completely.
Application
Do not shake the can as this can aerate the product and create bubbles in the coating.
- Stir the product well before and during use, using a wide (approx 25mm) flat stirrer in a circular lifting motion. This will ensure all ingredients are properly mixed.
- Using a good quality brush, apply the coating to the timber, ensuring even distribution across the surface. Lay off in the direction of the grain, maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Interior Clear may also be applied by spray. If applying by spray you may need to apply extra coats to build the desired protection and appearance.
Between Coats
- Allow 8 hours drying
- Sand lightly using 240 grade paper to remove any raised grain.
- Wipe the surface to remove any dust
- New or Bare Timber - apply 2 coats
- Pre-coated, tested Timber - apply 1 coat (For best results a second coat may be required on some pieces.)
Maintenance
- Clean using standard non abrasive household cleaners
- Do not use silicone based polishes
- For re-application follow instructions as per previously coated timber
