How to apply
Preparation - New or Bare
Ensure the surface is clean, smooth and completely dry before applying the product. Prior to coating all surfaces must be thoroughly free from all dirt, dust, grease, wax and oil.
- Wipe the area to be coated with mineral turpentine and follow with a clean, dry cloth. Allow the timber to dry before sanding.
Sand timber to achieve a smooth, even surface. If the timber boards are cupped or badly damaged start with a coarse grade paper (approx. 36-40 grit) and sand at a 45 degree angle to the boards. This will level the surface.
- Sand the timber with an 60-80 grit paper to even the surface.
- Once the timber surface is even, sand with a 100-120 grit paper to give the floor a smooth surface.
- Vacuum the floor to remove the majority of the sanding dust.
- Wipe the floor with a damp cloth to ensure all dust is removed.
- Once dry, proceed with application.
Note: Prepare bare or uncoated cork tiles in accordance with the supplier's recommendation.
Preparation - Previously Coated
If the previous coating is a two-pack or has worn back to expose bare timber/cork it must be completely removed. Remove all of the coating by sanding and proceed as for bare timber.
Previously coated timber must be cleaned to remove any waxes or oils.
- Wash the surface with household detergent to clean, allow to dry.
- Wipe the surface with mineral turpentine to remove any residue. Allow the surface to dry before sanding. Sand the coating to provide an even, matt surface.
- Sand using a 100-120 grade paper to remove any sheen and ensure the floor is even across the entire surface.
- Vacuum the floor to remove the majority of the sanding dust.
- Wipe the floor with a damp cloth to ensure all dust is removed.
- Once dry, proceed with application.
Note: If the previous coating is unknown, check compatibility and adhesion by applying the product to a test area before completing
the entire surface. To test on a small section follow steps 1 - 5 to clean and prepare the area. Using a good quality brush apply
one coat of Flooring Clear (200mm x 200mm) and allow to dry for 24 hours. Once dry cut a line through the test patch using a safety
knife. Apply a strip of sticky tape over the area across the cut, leaving an edge free push down firmly. Grip the end of the tape
and peel off in one quick motion. If the area remains intact sand to remove the test section and complete steps 1-6 for the entire
area to be coated. If the coating is removed with the tape, the adhesion is unsatisfactory and the old coating should be sanded off
completely.
Application
Do not shake the can as this can aerate the product and create bubbles in the coating.
- Stir the product well before and during use, using a wide (approx 25mm) flat stirrer in a circular lifting motion. This will ensure all ingredients are properly mixed.
- Cut in along the edges of the floor using a good quality brush. Do not work too far ahead when cutting in as the coating may start to dry. Using a good quality lambswool applicator apply the coating to the floor working along 3-4 boards at a time, ensure the coating is evenly distributed across the surface. Lay off in the direction of the grain, maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
Between Coats
- Allow 24 hours drying
- Sand lightly using 240 grade paper to remove any raised grain.
- Wipe the surface to remove any dust
- New or Bare Flooring - apply 3 coats
- Pre-coated, tested Flooring - apply 2 coats (For best results and in high traffic areas a third coat may be required.)
Maintenance
- Cleaning with standard non-abrasive household cleaners is recommended
- For re-application follow instructions as per previously coated timber
